A 43 year-old unemployed logger sits drinking beer in a bar on a weekday afternoon in Forks, WA. Timber, a mainstay industry on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, saw dramatic decline in the 1980s due to recession, changing market conditions, mechanization, and Public Policy concerning public lands and forest management. Forks, with a population of a little more than 3,000, sits on the western edge of the heavily forested Olympic National Park was nicknamed the” Logging Capital of the World.”
